Please look at our research guidelines before continuing.
Research on AG identified sustainability initiatives within a segment of its denim production model, the gold standard for the brand being the “Jean of Tomorrow” capsule collection. Though the brand offers a wide range of products, there is no indication that sustainability efforts are part of the overall design and manufacturing of other garments or denim styles.
AG does significant marketing exclusively based on the sustainability of its denim, but we couldn’t verify which percentage of its denim is actually environmentally friendly. This is despite a general claim in numerous press releases and articles that AG is a leader in the denim manufacturing industry in eco-friendly design and construction. When we randomly chose a pair of women’s jeans to consider, we clicked on the Analeigh high-rise straight crop. The material for this style is 98% cotton and 2% polyester- not sustainable because of cotton’s substantial environmental footprint. There is no other information on where or how this item was produced or designed.
Under the supply chain section on the AG website, a brief overview of processes used at its vertically integrated facilities to address corporate and environmental responsibility is offered. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether all technologies for environmentally friendly outcomes are used at both facilities. It appears the company-owned factories are only involved in jean production.
Insufficient information is available on the AG website and through broader internet searches to discern the exact sustainability practices being implemented and whether they extend beyond a limited selection of denim products. Consequently, we have contacted the brand via email with a series of inquiries and are waiting to hear back. You can find a partial list of the questions at the end of this review.

What AG sells: Only some styles in the AG denim category are sustainable. Please read the tags to figure out what you’re buying. A one-off capsule collection called “Jeans of Tomorrow” is, by far, the most environmentally friendly. In addition, the brand also sells conventionally manufactured men’s and women’s apparel.
What we want to like about AG Sustainability Effort, but have requested more information.
- Water Conservation
- An effort to use some eco-friendly fibers
- Waste Reduction
- Energy Efficiency
Water Conservation
AG has two water filtration systems that recycle “almost 100% of our water waste, meaning no runoff gets dumped back into our waterways or communities.” The website says all AG garments are now produced using recycled water from our Los Angeles and Mexico facilities. We are waiting for a response on water conservation efforts at factories the brand does not own.
Eco-Friendly Fibers
AG says the company sources materials that benefit people and the planet. They write that many of their textiles include “Tencel® and Modal®, which are entirely natural and biodegradable.” We didn’t find that to be the case.
In mid-April 2024, we did two searches for Tencel® and Modal®. When searching for Tencel using the search tab on the website, only the women’s Caden wide-leg trousers in two colors came up. Another search looking for the word Tencel® throughout the entire website found an Aidan shirt, but when we clicked on the link, we got a 404 Page Not Found pop-up. The search for Modal® brought up nothing, as did a search for lyocell. We looked at various categories for women and men, and Tencel was listed as an option, but only the Caden, mentioned above, was identified.
Waste Reduction
We like that AG pays attention to the pattern-cutting process to utilize fabric efficiently and minimize leftover material. They also collect about 1,400 pounds of scraps and send them to be repurposed for homes and cars as part of recycling initiatives.
Energy Efficiency
AG seems to be making some progress in using less energy and being more efficient. However, we contacted the brand for more information.
Other sustainability efforts:
Complimentary Alterations:
In-store purchases include complimentary alterations. The better something fits, the more likely you will wear it and keep it in your wardrobe.
We submitted the following questions to the CS or Public Relations emails provided on the AG website:
- Requested a copy of the brand’s CSR Report.
- Inquired whether jeans are only made in the Los Angeles or Mexico facilities. If not, where else is their denim being produced?
- Sought clarification on water conservation data and application in manufacturing processes brand-wide.
- Inquired about the brand’s guidelines and criteria for using and sourcing eco-friendly fibers. We noted that few of their items use preferred fabrics , and many still use conventional material.
- Requested information on the limited offerings of the eco-collection and plans to expand.
- Inquired about plans for a peer-to-peer resale platform and any other new initiatives.
- Inquired about the data used to calculate outcomes of its vapor wash for denim production. The website says AG uses “65% less water, 65% less chemicals, and 35% less energy.”
- The brand says it is pursuing the use of renewable energy sources, heat conservation, and fabric recycling. We inquired about the current status of these efforts and whether they applied exclusively to production facilities, stores, or corporate headquarters. We also inquired whether these initiatives extended to other factories beyond the two owned and operated by AG.
